Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, home of Uganda’s wild endangered white rhinos. It is found in Nakasongola District, near Nakitoma Village, 3hrs drive from Kampala along Kampala – Gulu highway approximately 180km by road on your way to Murchison falls national park; it covers around (70 sq km).
In 1970’s,a number of rhinos fell victim in the native wars that took place in Northern Uganda, these serious killings and poaching led to the extinction of the White rhinos in Uganda until 2005 when Ziwa rhino sanctuary was established to re-introduce white rhinos in Uganda.
This was done and funded by the Rhino Fund Uganda. Ziwa rhino sanctuary also works hand in hand with Uganda Wildlife Authority and Ziwa ranches to ensure the conservation of the white rhinos in Uganda.
This is the only place in Uganda where you can find White rhinos. Rhino tracking is so interesting because it gives you chance to track rhinos at a close range in guidance of a skilled ranger because Rhinos are tricky animals that at times become aggressive and feel the edge of attacking when the feel threatened. Tracking rhinos can take duration of 2-3hrs depending on their movements, however there are rangers that track them and make communications on their spots for you to find them easily.
On a lucky day of your tracking, you can as well see different mammals like the antelopes, hippos and water bucks as they graze in the savannah grasslands.
The sanctuary harbors over 350 bird species, serious birders can have a full or half day time of birding either on a guided nature walk or on boat. Ziwa rhino sanctuary has got experienced bird guides. that can help you spot different bird species. These spotted birds include; Shoebill stork, Abdim’s stork, blue spotted dove, and African black crake and many more.
Nature walks are also hosted in Ziwa rhino sanctuary, and these always last for half a day or full day depending on your interests, however on your lucky hike through the sanctuary where you will spot animals like the oribis, reed bucks, gray duikers, bush bucks, hartebeests, monkeys, butterflies and monitor lizards.
